Gary Player

The great south african champion has skilfully interpreted the sinuosity of the Valtenesi. He wanted the greens to be protected by round and sometimes crater-deep bunkers.

In a landscape of rare natural beauty, this course will fascinate the most experienced golfers and entertain neophytes.

This hole with its dogleg to the right ensures a spectacular tee-off from the top of an ancient cedar woodland. Make sure to place your tee shot on the flatter part of the fairway, avoiding the two deep bunkers on the inside of the dogleg. The large green is guarded by two narrow but treacherously deep bunkers to the right.

A dogleg to the left; it's better not to "cut" the curve too much beacuse of the risk of running out of limit or in the bunkers on the left. The green is long, but not so wide and with the second shot you should avoid the thick tree patch that delimits it on the left side.

A par 4 that’s not particularly long, but features deep bunkers on both sides of the fairway. Your approach shot has to be the right length, as the green is guarded by another high-lipped bunker, with a woody slope to the rear.

A fairly long, almost straight par 5, with all the intimidating stuff concentrated towards the green. Once you have carried the strategically placed bunkers, play your approach shot carefully, avoiding the water hazard guarding the right hand side of the green. Less ambitious players can avoid any risk by playing an approach shot onto the left hand side of the apron.

Your shot off the tee on this par 4 skirts a water hazard to the right of the fairway. To the left of the landing area is a bunker. The green is guarded by a large leafy tree on the left and a bunker on the right. A good portion of this green slopes down quite markedly..

A far from straightforward par 3, its multi-tiered green stands on a peninsula jutting out into the lake, protected by two bunkers on the right.

This par 4 bends slightly to the right, the second part being uphill. Make sure your tee shot avoids the bunkers on either side of the fairway and, if possible, play it slightly to the left to get a better view of the green for the approach shot. Take the slope into account when going for the green.

Magnificent par 5 in which Gary Player's skill in interpreting the sinuous contours of the terrain shines through. The tee shot should put the ball in a position to pass the corner of the dog leg that curves to the left. The second shot must be carefully directed to avoid the water obstacle to the right. It is best to play the ball slightly to the left, also to counter the side slope of the fairway. The green is deep, but not too wide and players often use the high bank to the left to "carom" the ball into the green.

Spectacular uphill par 3 with views across to Palazzo Arzaga and the Church of San Martino. The main dilemma with your tee shot is which club to use to avoid the little round, deep bunkers guarding the green. When in doubt, play long or to the right, pitching onto the apron in front of the green. The green is multi-tiered with several steps, some of them rather steep.
